Reverend Doctor James C. King, Pastor/Head of Staff
Jim has been at SPC since January of 2018. He spent the previous 17 years as the Pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Lewisburg PA, home of Bucknell University. Prior to that he was an Associate Pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Moorestown NJ, just across the river from Philly. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Westmont College in Santa Barbara, CA, where he was a four year starter on the varsity tennis team, his Master of Divinity degree from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena CA, and his Doctor of Ministry degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, MA. Jim’s hometown is Walnut Creek, CA. He and Pauline have been married for 24 years, their daughter Libby is a paralegal in Richmond, their son Drew is a sophomore at the University of Pittsburgh. Jim is a competitive tennis player and an avid golfer.
Dr. Mark Patterson, Director of Music
Dr. Mark Patterson is a nationally acclaimed composer, conductor, and teacher. In addition to leading the dynamic music ministry at Salisbury Presbyterian, he enjoys playing tennis, working in the garden, hiking, and spending time with his wife and two children. Pauline King, Director of Children’s Ministries
Pauline started as Music Makers Director in the Fall of 2018, which was a natural segue to Director of Children’s Ministry in 2019. With over 20 years of experience creating and leading ministries for kids, Pauline loves working with kids of all ages. She’s married to Jim (yes, that Jim King!) and has 2 nearly grown kids, Libby and Drew.

Katie Zarroli, Accounting Manager
Katie joined SPC’s staff in 2014. She earned her Bachelors in Accounting and Information Systems, as well as her Masters Degree in Taxation, at Virginia Tech – Go Hokies! Prior to joining SPC, she obtained her CPA license and worked as a tax accountant at a regional accounting firm. Katie was born and raised in the Salisbury neighborhood, and currently resides in Salisbury with her husband, Greg, three sons, Luke, Erik and Graham, and beagle named Scooter. In Katie’s spare time she loves to bake.
Marie Harper, Preschool Director
Marie graduated from Clarion University of PA with her BS in Habilitative Sciences and received her M.Ed. from VCU. In 1998 she began to volunteer her time as SPP’s bookkeeper. She remained in that role for 4 years. In 2005 she was hired as a teacher in the Pre-K program. In August of 2011 she was hired as the Director of the Preschool. Marie is married to her high school sweetheart, Ty and lives in Midlothian with their two children. Her family’s passions include art, music and PETS!
Heather Baum, Preschool Assistant Director
Heather Baum came to Salisbury Presbyterian Preschool as a preschool parent to daughters, Lucie and Emmaline. With a degree in Early Childhood Education from Virginia Tech, Heather began filling in as a substitute teacher, leading classes during camp, and in 2010, was thrilled to permanently join SPP’s staff. She currently works in the preschool’s office as the Assistant Director. Heather also produces weekly bulletins and newsletters for another local church and, with her husband, owns Dogtopia West End. In the past, Heather has worked as SPC’s Communications Coordinator and as a technical analyst with a Northern Virginia based government contractor, developing websites for the U.S. military.
Heather grew up in Herndon, VA where she met and married her high school sweetheart, Will. Along with their two teenage daughters, Heather and Will have a rescued lab-hound mix who loves to join them on hikes, camping trips, and watching the girls’ sporting events.
Amber Earley, Communication Coordinator
Amber has enjoyed her role as Communication Coordinator since August 2018. Her most fulfilling role since graduating from Radford University, has been as a stay-at-home Mom to her rambunctious twin boys, Van and Thatcher.
Amber grew up in Chesterfield County and currently lives in Midlothian with her husband, Jarad, twin boys, and two Chinese Crested dogs, Zoey & Yoshi. As a family they enjoy spending their summer days boating, doing water sports and hiking. Amber enjoys crafting, gardening and a good book.
Joanne Sherman, Music Academy Director
Joanne Sherman, Artistic Director of the Joyful Voices Chorus, taught elementary, public school music for thirty-one years in a variety of locations including South Carolina, Massachusetts, New York and Virginia. She also taught for three years in the R.A.F. Lakenheath Elementary D.O.D. School in England. She holds a B.S. in Music Education from the University of Mass., an M.A. in Education from Michigan State University and a Level II Orff Certification from Hofstra University. In 2009, she retired from the position of Music Specialist in Chesterfield County, Virginia, served briefly as Interim Co-Director of Music for Salisbury Presbyterian Church, Midlothian, VA and has coordinated the SPC Music Academy since 2010.
As well as working on several N.Y. State Educators’ Association committees, Joanne has served as a clinician and guest conductor for various conferences and choruses and has sung with the Springfield Symphony Chorus (Springfield, MA.), the Camerata Chorale (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) the James River Singers in Richmond, VA., and the Richmond Symphony Chorus. She and her husband, Lawson, currently sing with The Medley of Friends Ensemble and the Salisbury Presbyterian Chancel Choir.
In September of 2018, after much planning, research and fundraising, Joanne was an integral force in making The Joyful Voices Community Chorus a reality for those in central Virginia who join their voices together to “Defy Dementia….One Song at a Time”! The chorus offers a true choral experience and performs two concerts per year!
Lydia Woods, Administrative Assistant
Lydia became the “face of SPC” when she began her role as Administrative Assistant in April of 2018. Lydia enjoys baking & cooking, travelling, going to concerts, and spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys watching movies and youtube videos with her sister, Sabrina, and step-brother, Liam (when he comes to visit). She also enjoys her time shared with 5 (yes, 5!) dogs; 3 Boston Terriers (Jezebel, Babe and Friday), 1 Frenchie (Buddha) and 1 Pitbull (Zeus).
Cleveland Taylor, Facility Manager
Cleveland began his role as Facilities Manager with SPC in 2018. His prior work experience includes dedicating 6 years of service to the U.S. Air Force and Reserves, retired from the VA Department of Corrections after 30 years, and worked for 6 years in Facilities Assistance at Mountain Christian Church in Baltimore, Maryland. Cleveland enjoys spending time vacationing with his wife, Kimberly, and fishing for freshwater bass with his son, Courtney, daughter-in-law, Tabitha, and grandsons, Kristian and Greyson.
Cathy Armistead, Organist
Cathy Armistead began as Salisbury’s Organist/Accompanist in October 2018, at which time she also began teaching piano at the Music Academy. Previously, Cathy has served churches in and around Richmond in full-time Music Ministry since 1982, and taught music at St. Edwards-Epiphany School in the late 70’s. Cathy received a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education and Masters degree in Organ Performance. She and husband, Keith, have been married 41 years and have a daughter and a son. They also have 3 “fur babies”, Tuxie, Timon and Nala. Cathy is a runner and enjoys watching college basketball and tennis. Go Rafa!
